It may sound too simple, but breathing consciously is an art that will massively impact your training, guaranteed!
Because breathing is such a vital and unconscious act, many of us don’t pay much attention to it…we just do it!
But, once you do turn your attention onto the breath you will feel the difference, instantly.
It’s one of the easiest tools to use and it has one of the largest impacts!
So, how can you breathe, consciously….
Firstly, many of us tend to shallow breathe using our chest. If you watch a baby sleep you will see their belly rise and fall with each breath. This is called diaphragmatic breathing. Breathing deeply in this way allows the maximum amount of oxygen to enter the bloodstream with each breath.
All mammals in rest breathe this way… except for us…click here for the wikipedia breakdown.
Shallow breathing is a natural response to stress and anxiety, this is an initial “flight or flight” response.
Try to practise belly breathing by drawing the breath in from your core first and then into the chest. Extend the belly out when breathing in, and draw it in during the outward breath.
This is signalling your body to relax and remain neutral.
When tension rises and you feel your body respond (perhaps your horse has spooked or is feeling hot), take a deep, exaggerated breath to signal relaxation and release the tension.
